A Few Considerations When Buying Jewelry From a Pawn Shop

by Isabelle Hall

Pawn shops often have remarkable jewelry for sale. Many times they will have vintage or heirloom jewelry that was pawned for cash and never redeemed. If you are interested in buying jewelry from a pawn shop, here are a few things to consider before you purchase:

  • Jewelry Pawn Shop - Look for a pawn shop that specializes in jewelry. These pawn shops will have a much bigger selection of jewelry than a pawn shop that specializes in musical instruments, tools, and other items.
  • Spot Prices - Before you go to a pawn shop, check the daily spot prices for gold, silver and platinum on the metals market. By knowing the current value of precious metals, you can tell if the jewelry in the pawn shop is being offered at a fair price.
  • Jewelry Loop - Bring a magnifying glass or jewelry loop so that you can see the markings on a piece of jewelry and closely examine gemstones. The better you can see the jewelry being offered for sale, the more informed you will be as to its value.
  • Quality Marks - All silver and gold jewelry is marked with a quality stamp on the back or inside of the piece. This mark will tell you exactly what metals are in a piece of jewelry. Research quality marks on the internet so you will know how to identify the metals you are considering for purchase.
  • Gemstones - Look closely at all the gemstones in a piece of jewelry to see if there are any cracks or chips. You should only buy gemstones that are high quality. If you are looking at jewelry with diamonds, check if any of the stones have inclusions or flaws. Do not buy any jewelry with highly noticeable flaws.
  • Negotiate - A pawn shop will always offer its jewelry for sale at the highest possible price so it can make as much profit as possible. If you see a piece of jewelry that you would like to purchase, be sure to negotiate with the pawn shop for a better price. It never hurts to ask if the pawn shop will take less than their original asking price.
  • Return Policy - Ask the pawn shop if they have a return policy. Some pawn shops will offer a 30-day money back guarantee on all items with no questions asked. After you buy jewelry, it is always a good idea to have it appraised by a reputable jewelry shop to make sure that you got a good deal. If you find that the jewelry is not as good as you thought it was, you can always return it if they have a return policy in effect.

Pawn shops can have incredible jewelry for sale. If you find a pawn shop with a great selection of jewelry, such as Desert Jewelry Mart & Coins, return often to see if they have new jewelry in stock. As we all know, timing is everything.

I was able to find some necklaces and earrings that made me look gorgeous, while still maintaining my professional edge.
