How To Start A Collection For Your Children

by Isabelle Hall

With Christmas right around the corner, you may already be thinking about what to get your children as a gift. One idea is to get them started with a collection. Not only will you be introducing them to a great hobby, but it will be fun for you to add to the collection for other special occasions, like birthdays and other holidays. Here are some ideas to consider as you make your shopping list.

Dolls

Do you have little girls? If so, consider giving special dolls. A collector doll might be purchased now for a low price and there's always a chance that it will go up in value. However, that's not always a guarantee. For that reason, it's smart to give the doll with the expectation that your little girl will love it and enjoy it. If you know your daughter well enough to know that she will want to keep this doll apart from her other regular dolls, consider buying a special display cabinet for her room. A collector doll would be a great gift, even if your little girl is all grown up now.

Model Cars

Is your son a car afficionado? No matter their age, boys are often obsessed with vehicles of all types. Starting your son with his own car collection would certainly feed that passion. If he's still very young, it will be very affordable to start his collection with the gift of a car holder and several little cars. Older boys might enjoy receiving models they can build themselves, or with the help of a parent. If you are planning to give an older son a valuable collector car, be ready to pay a lot of money. The reason for that is that today, companies that produce collection cars have licensing agreements with the real car manufacturers and the licenses themselves are expensive. Make sure your son understands that this is one gift that truly needs to be taken care of and protected.

Indian Head Cents

A great collection for both boys and girls is to start them off with an Indian Head Cent coin. These coins were produced between 1859 and 1909, so they're already very old. James Barton Longacre, the chief engraver at the Philadelphia Mint, probably had no idea that this penny coin would be in demand many years after he designed it. The Indian Head coin is an impressive gift by itself, as it is larger than today's pennies. Also, it is thicker and it is made of copper-nickel. The beautiful part of the coin, though, is the gorgeous facsimile of a dignified Indian wearing a traditional head dress. In fact, the coin can be incorporated in the design of jewelry like earrings or a ring. The great thing is that you can find a variety of the coins online and the gift will be delivered by Christmas. No matter what gift you select to start your child's collection, it's always a great idea to write a message to go with your gift. For example, if you give a doll, your message might say something like, "You are lovelier than any doll in existence!" A message given with a collector car might say, "I hope this car takes you on a great collection adventure." And, finally, for a coin collector, the message might say, "You are treasured even more than this coin is."
